Students will select from the following units. They may also elect to participate in independent learning units based on their own areas of interest.

Problem Solving and Team Building

Students will start the year working in teams to solve small mechanical problems, such as lowering marbles to the ground or creating a rubber-band-powered ping pong ball launcher.

Song about Art

In this unit, students will learn about fine art and the songs that it has inspired. They will select a piece of art and create a song to go with it.

Board Game Design

In this unit, students will combine their knowledge of math, history, technical writing, and speaking and listening to create a board game.

Understanding Sadness

In this affective unit, students explore what makes them sad and ways to overcome that sadness. They will also learn when it may not be healthy to be sad.

In this unit, students will read Othello and discuss how it remains relevant today.

A Raisin in the Sun and Marginalization

In this unit, students will read the play A Raisin in the Sun as a jumping off point for the exploration of marginalization of people in America. Students will then research modern examples of marginalization and present ideas for a social justice project to their class.

The Castaway and Sailing Adventure Stories

In this unit, students will study the trope of the castaway, tracing its literary development from The Odyssey to Survivor. They will examine how the character reflect the values of the culture from which it comes.

Studetns will use the case of Henrietta Lacks to explore medical research and its ethical implications.

Students will use what they've learned in science and social studies to write a piece of distopian fiction.
